This technology is not new. Nor is it a bonus. Using motion capture is now the minimum. Unless you've got a multi-million dollar physics engine that really works with visuals, motion capture is simply necessary if you don't want Jar Jar/Shrek Donkeys on the screen.

@HughWalenski Motion capture is used to get the actors facial expression to avoid creatures that don't look like they have life.

@waytomuchsparetime That is only one aspect, and I'm glad you mentioned it, because that too is a requirement. Characters either look like you mentioned, lifeless, or they are so exaggerated, it's cartoon-ish. I think the facial motion capture is just as important as full body-action.

avatar = waste of money, money spent mostly just on motion capturing suits and special gadgets that had to be made spesificly, instead of just useing 3d rendering tools allready avable and trying to improve upon what will be more used in the future, than old tricks thats expensive and requires actors aswell :c

I think it deserves to be the best movie made or ranked .. Becuz the animation and the world James Cameron made I mean not everyone can come up with a really language and creatures everything was just amazing and the plot everything and to think it took 15 years just to make this .. Bravo!
