@emaleroland "Democracy is a form of government in which all people have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives." How that equal say is establish is open to wide interpretation, and direct suffrage by simple majority is only one way. There are many kinds of majority: Simple majority, absolutely majority, and a super majority to name a few.

@landen99 dude, you're high. Democracy deals with a simple majority, not a super majority like what we have in the Senate. It's pointless. Out founding fathers gave us a Republic. We know because they said so and they said they didn't want a democracy. The word democracy is not in the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution or the constitution of any of the 50 states, even once. If we're a democracy, can you explain that?
@emaleroland Our ... ( 4 months ago by landen99)
@emaleroland Our democracy uses a simple majority most of the time, but "rule by the people" may use other kinds of majorities, if it wishes. While we were given a republic, we have evolved through our living constitution more into a direct democracy with a president directly elected by the people (as opposed to by the electoral college, except in formality only), senators elected by the people directly (as opposed to by the states), and laws placed on the ballot by the people .

@landen99 a "direct" democracy - you do realize the popular vote does not win you the white house, don't you?
@emaleroland If the ... ( 4 months ago by landen99)
@emaleroland If the popular vote of each state wins each respective state, then yes it does. The views of those "representatives" elected in the electoral college do not matter because they always vote the will of the people of their state, and so the representative democracy (the republic being merely one form of democracy) is reduced to a direct democracy by state. We are only a republic when our representative aristocrats have the power to ignore their constituents.
@landen99 No it ... ( 4 months ago by emaleroland)
@landen99 No it doesn't. And the electoral college is what picks the President, based on the popular vote but they are not bound to vote that way and have not always voted that way and it's not the popular vote. You can with the electoral college and not have the popular vote. Ask Al Bore. You're making no sense whatsoever.

@landen99 "the republic being merely one form of democracy"...what?
I challenge you to prove that "majority rule" (democracy) is a form of "rule of law" (republic).
The video depicts the perfect example of the difference; the legal right (republic) of a wanted man being protected from the harms of a mob (democracy).
You are conveniently incorrectly equating voting rights to democracy.
If anything, the Republic is giving the people a taste of democracy; not the other way around.
@landen99 "Rule by ... ( 3 months ago by brw3rd)
@landen99 "Rule by the people may be taken as greater than 75% "
Possibly. However, that would require a rule (law) to dictate that distinction. And, a governing body to enforce that rule, which is governance by law (Republic).

From the Thomas Jefferson Enclyclopedia:
"Status: We have not found any evidence that Thomas Jefferson said or wrote, "When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny," or any of its listed variations."
I don't care how many links there are to this bogus quote, it's still bogus.
