Raj Patel on The Value of Nothing

Watch this book trailer video to hear author, activist and academic Raj Patel talk about his book The Value of Nothing. Opening with Oscar Wilde's observation that "nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing," Patel shows how our faith in prices as a way of valuing the world is misplaced. This short, timely and inspiring book reveals that we not only need to find a new economic model, but that the larger failure beneath the food, climate and economic crises is a political one. If economics is about choices, Patel writes, it isn't often said who gets to make them. The Value of Nothing offers a fresh and accessible way to think about the environment and economics and the choices we will all need to make in order to create a sustainable economy and society.

What crises? What ecological crises? this guy is an alarmist and panderer to those who want to hear the worst in man and humanity. The value of nothing? There is always value in everything and everyone. Michael Jordan's ability created demand, and he was the only supply. Hence, as more demanded of his talents and ability, the higher his price. In other words, he has opportunity costs -- or choices he can make with his time. He chose to supply himself to the market. This guy is a wrong>

Friedman, Volcker, Greenspan and Paulson have nothing to do with a free market. They are all government interventionists. They would be out of work in a free market!
The banking sector is still one of the most heavily regulated businesses in the US and UK. Truly free market decentralised banks have never caused economic chaos.

@spyked1 No system and/or institution ever just "evolves" and anyone who claims it does is either blind to or hiding inequities in power. Things happen because people MAKE them so. When one person's priorities take precedence over anothers' then unjust systems come about, like our food system.

@tothemax01 False. Your first error: you talk about these things as if they are independent of each other. They are not, and thus your breaking down into false categories may serve to make some point of yours, but has no bearing on reality.
@Mises85 Supply and ... ( 1 day ago by Commentary1984)
@Mises85 Supply and demand is a weak theory, and your knowledge of it is less than impressive. Burgers are not accessible in excess because SO MANY PEOPLE WANT BURGERS. Marketing and low prices + people in poverty and children watching commercials = CREATING demand through poverty and psychological and physiological coercion. Also....really about the generosity thing? Then how did our ancestors and tribal peoples survive during the lean times? OH RIGHT! Generosity.
